There were three girls named Ellen,
Annemarie, and Kristi. Annemarie and
Kristi are sisters. Some of the Nazis found them on the curb. Ellen and Annemarie were racing to the curb. One of the soldiers said, ”She looks like my
daughter.’’ He was talking about Kristi.
The soldiers told them not to run again.
Annemarie told their moms who were sipping on tea.
The Nazis took away coffee so they
used hot water and put herbs in it and that was their coffee. And they took cigarettes away too. They used dried weeds and rolled up
paper. The Danish told lots of fairy
Tales. The one that Annemarie knew was
true about their king always walked down the street, but when the Nazis came
the king couldn’t walk down the street. The Nazis also destroyed other places
like Norway, Holland, Belgium, and Sweden.
The Germans closed stores ran by Jews.
Kristi needed a button for her jacket but the store was closed. The Nazis stole the list of the people’s
names from the Synagogue.
Ellen’s parents had left and, Ellen
stayed with, Annemarie’s family.
Annemarie’s sister Lise had died a long time ago. Ellen pretended to be Lise because the Nazis
were coming. Ellen had dark hair, but
the rest of the family had blond.
Annemarie had to take Ellen’s medal of the Star of David. When the Nazis came in they were looking for
Ellen. Annemarie’s Dad got pictures of
Lise, Annemarie, and Kristi as babies, but in the picture of Lise as a baby she
had dark hair. The Nazis left and saw
there was nothing there.
Ellen, Kristi, and Annemarie were
going to Annemarie’s Uncles house. They
always thought they had a Great Aunt, but it was a lie. They were having a funeral for the Great Aunt.
At the house were lots of people for the funeral. They were friends of their
Great Aunt even though it was a lie. The
soldiers had appeared at their uncle’s house.
They wanted them to open the box of the Great Aunt. Then Annemarie’s Mom brought up that she died
from Typhus and the doctor told them to keep it closed. The soldiers want them to turn the candles
out or shut the curtains. The curtains
were black everywhere.
Annemarie’s uncle, mom, and Peter
helped Ellen and other Jews at the funeral to escape to the boats. Peter was the husband of Lise. They went on a path with trees so the Nazis
couldn’t see them. They didn’t know where
they were going. There was a gift in
Ellen’s Dad’s Pocket for Annemarie’s Uncle. When Ellen’s Dad tripped on a tree
root the gift fell out. Annemarie’s Mom
found it on her way home, but on her way home she tripped on a tree root too
and broke her ankle. Annemarie went on
the trail in the woods to bring a basket of food to her Uncle. The Nazis were in the woods too and saw her.
They had two highly trained dogs with them.
They gave some of the food to the dogs, then the dogs stepped away
because there was a handkerchief in the basket.
They didn’t like the smell of the handkerchief. The soldiers began looking for the boats and
the people. They had traveled to Sweden. They were safe there to take shelter.
When the war ended, and Annemarie
was twelve, church bells rang all over Copenhagen. The Danish flag was raised
everywhere. Annemarie, her Mom, and
Kristi returned home. Peter was in jail by the Nazis. He sent a letter from jail
saying that he loved them, and he was not afraid. He was proud of what he could
do for the country and that he wanted to be buried by Lise.
This was a true story. I liked it because it was Interesting. It was like a book I have never read before. There was a lot of action. And some of the characters were worried.
