Book Report: First Farm in the Valley

Book Report:  First Farm in the Valley
Written By: Anne Pellowski

Anna Pellowski was a girl who was Polish and American.  She lived in Wisconsin in the late 1800s.  Anna was a Catholic and a shepherd.

Anna, her cousins, and her brother were shepherds.  Hail started coming down once when she was herding sheep.  Shepherding was hard work.

Anna’s life was dramatic.  Once she helped her father and brother bring wood to Dodge.  While they were doing this, they almost got hit by a train.  Another time, diphtheria spread around their town, but it didn’t come to her family.  They were lucky.  Also, one time she was babysitting alone with her brothers and sisters and a stranger came.  Even though her life was dramatic, it turned out better in the end.

They did different things to celebrate their faith.  On Easter her family drank from fresh spring water. They also celebrated her mom’s name day and  Anna’s patron saint’s feast day.  They celebrated their faith obediently.

I thought the songs were weird, but I want to read more books from this series.
I like the book because I learn how people from Poland lived a little bit.

The Living room and J.P.'s Bedroom

The living room and J.P.'s room have some differences.  The living room has a T.V. but J.P.'s room has posters.  They both have pictures on the walls.  J.P.'s room has a bunk bed, but the living room has couches and a chair. The rooms both have light switches.  We read and sleep in J.P.'s room, but we pray in the living room.  All of us play in both rooms.  They both have crosses and clocks.  J.P. is in J.P.'s room, and Josie is in the living room.  J.P.'s room has stars on the ceiling and a moon on the wall, but the living room has nothing on the ceiling.  The rooms both have fans, lights, and windows.  Both rooms are different, but we still enjoy the rooms.

The Princess Who Climbs Trees

Once upon a time, there lived a princess who loved to climb trees.  One day, she was climbing a willow tree in the enchanted forest when she saw her prince.  She has known this prince for years.  They have been planning to get married.  She climbed down to see him, but when she was climbing down, she fell.  She hurt her back.  Magically a fairy came and made her back better.  She married the prince and lived happily ever after.

Tower of Terror

Have you ever been on the Tower of Terror at Disney World?  You walk in and sit down and buckle up.  It is dark inside. You go up and then you go forward.  THEN YOU FALL DOWN!  It goes up and down many times.  It feels like you're falling up and you can't feel your seat. Some people like this ride and some don't.  I don't like this ride, because it is scary.

Just a Wild Flower

I am just a wild flower.  A wild flower is just a weed.  The weed is like my tourettes, because a weed is annoying and in the way.  Weeds grow out of control like my tics.  But the flower is still beautiful like me.

Animal Shelter Advertisment

This white, lovable dog plays nicely and learns tricks fast.  He's an extremely good dog.

This orange, kind cat purrs gently and snuggles very softly.  She never scratches.

This brown, furry guinea pig squeaks quietly and plays kindly.  He never escapes his cage.

How to Ride a Horse

I love horses because they're gentle, strong creatures and are pretty.  Here is how you tack-up and ride a horse:
First, walk up to your horse slowly, and gently position the bridal on your horse's head. Next, lead your horse out of his stall with a lead rope.  Then, brush your horse with a special brush just for your horse.  Next, clean out your horse's hooves with a hoof pick.  Then, carefully attach the saddle on your horse.   Finally, attach the rein onto the bridal.  Now you are ready to ride.
First lead your horse with the reins to the riding arena.  Then mount your horse, and begin to trot slowly around the arena.  Next, start to walk at a steady gallop.  When you're done, dismount your horse and lead him back to the barn.  Then, take the saddle off gently, and brush your horse softly.  Finally, lead him to his stall, take the bridal off, and shut the stall door.
It's high when you ride, but I love to trot because you go up and down.

Interviews

There are two kids named John Paul and Jocelyn.  They are both home schooled and they have one dog.  John Paul's dog's name is Lady.  Jocelyn's dog's name is Scooby.  John Paul likes the color blue, but Jocelyn likes turquoise.  John Paul's favorite subject is Latin, unlike Jocelyn who likes Music.  John Paul's least favorite sport is Hockey, however Jocelyn's least favorite sport is Karate. Everybody has different likes and dislikes.

The First Four Years written by Laura Ingalls Wilder

The First Four Years is the last book in the Little House on the Prairie book series. I finished the book a couple days ago. It is about  Laura and Almanzo being married.  First Almanzo gets Laura a pony and she named it Trixi. Next Laura has a baby named Rose.  Then Laura had another baby.  However the baby died. A tornado comes but it didn't hit their house.  However the house caught on fire later.  Finally they built another house and lived happily.  I like the book because it's very interesting how they lived.

Flowers at the Arboretum

I went to the Dallas Arboretum.  I saw a flower bed along the trail.  There were red roses at the bottom.  Above to the roses were tulips.  By the purple tulips there were white daisies.  Above the daisies there were Indian Paintbrushes.  In between the flowers, there were dirt and grass.  I thought the flowers were beautiful!

The Problem With Patches

When I go to the front yard to paint my nails, Patches comes and bumps into me and messes me up by walking around me.  I can lock him up and then he wouldn't bother me.  But he meows and he's sad because he doesn't like to be locked up.  After my nails dry, I can take him out of his cage. Usually Patches is a good cat, and I love him.

Sweet Tomatoes

Sweet Tomatoes is my favorite restaurant.  I went with my mom once.  The dining area had brightly colored tables and chairs. The booths were soft and striped.  When I stood near the food bars, I could hear people talking and people cooking in the kitchen while smelling soup.  Their soups, salads, and veggies were delicious.  I got clam chowder soup and it was good.  Sweet Tomatoes is a great place because it is healthy.

The Gift

I made a purple potholder to give to my Aunt Judy for christmas.  It had a flower pattern on it and purple bias on the outside.  Nana helped me to sew the potholder.  It said"JU-JU" on it.  It was Aunt Judy's favorite color.  Aunt Judy loved it when she opened the present. She hugged me, and she still uses the potholder today.

Book Report: Number the Stars

Book Report:  Number the Stars by: Lois Lowry
By: Jamie Driver

There were three girls named Ellen, Annemarie, and Kristi.  Annemarie and Kristi are sisters. Some of the Nazis found them on the curb.  Ellen and Annemarie were racing to the curb.  One of the soldiers said, ”She looks like my daughter.’’ He was talking about Kristi.  The soldiers told them not to run again.  Annemarie told their moms who were sipping on tea.

The Nazis took away coffee so they used hot water and put herbs in it and that was their coffee.  And they took cigarettes away too.  They used dried weeds and rolled up paper.  The Danish told lots of fairy Tales.  The one that Annemarie knew was true about their king always walked down the street, but when the Nazis came the king couldn’t walk down the street. The Nazis also destroyed other places like Norway, Holland, Belgium, and Sweden.  The Germans closed stores ran by Jews.  Kristi needed a button for her jacket but the store was closed.  The Nazis stole the list of the people’s names from the Synagogue.

Ellen’s parents had left and, Ellen stayed with, Annemarie’s family.  Annemarie’s sister Lise had died a long time ago.   Ellen pretended to be Lise because the Nazis were coming.  Ellen had dark hair, but the rest of the family had blond.  Annemarie had to take Ellen’s medal of the Star of David.  When the Nazis came in they were looking for Ellen.  Annemarie’s Dad got pictures of Lise, Annemarie, and Kristi as babies, but in the picture of Lise as a baby she had dark hair.  The Nazis left and saw there was nothing there.

Ellen, Kristi, and Annemarie were going to Annemarie’s Uncles house.  They always thought they had a Great Aunt, but it was a lie.  They were having a funeral for the Great Aunt. At the house were lots of people for the funeral. They were friends of their Great Aunt even though it was a lie.  The soldiers had appeared at their uncle’s house.  They wanted them to open the box of the Great Aunt.  Then Annemarie’s Mom brought up that she died from Typhus and the doctor told them to keep it closed.  The soldiers want them to turn the candles out or shut the curtains.  The curtains were black everywhere.

Annemarie’s uncle, mom, and Peter helped Ellen and other Jews at the funeral to escape to the boats.  Peter was the husband of Lise.  They went on a path with trees so the Nazis couldn’t see them.  They didn’t know where they were going.    There was a gift in Ellen’s Dad’s Pocket for Annemarie’s Uncle. When Ellen’s Dad tripped on a tree root the gift fell out.  Annemarie’s Mom found it on her way home, but on her way home she tripped on a tree root too and broke her ankle.  Annemarie went on the trail in the woods to bring a basket of food to her Uncle.  The Nazis were in the woods too and saw her. They had two highly trained dogs with them.  They gave some of the food to the dogs, then the dogs stepped away because there was a handkerchief in the basket.  They didn’t like the smell of the handkerchief.  The soldiers began looking for the boats and the people. They had traveled to Sweden. They were safe there to take shelter.

When the war ended, and Annemarie was twelve, church bells rang all over Copenhagen. The Danish flag was raised everywhere.  Annemarie, her Mom, and Kristi returned home. Peter was in jail by the Nazis. He sent a letter from jail saying that he loved them, and he was not afraid. He was proud of what he could do for the country and that he wanted to be buried by Lise.

This was a true story. I liked it because it was Interesting.   It was like a book I have never read before.    There was a lot of action.  And some of the characters were worried.

Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan

By: Jamie Driver

January 19, 2012

Ronald Wilson Reagan was born on February 16, 1911 in Tampico, Illinois. He went to High School in Dixon, Illinois. He played football and baseball and swam. Ronald also acted in school plays and served as president of his senior class. Reagan was an ocean life guard and saved 77 people. Reagan went to Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois. One time he gave a speech and he thought it was exhilarating.

Reagan radio announced college football games in Iowa. He broadcast Chicago’s two baseball teams the Cubs and White Soxs. He wrote about sports in a local newspaper. Reagan was a movie actor. He was most famous for the movie “Knute Rocken”, when he played George Gipp. Reagan hosted a show called General Electric Theater.

Reagan got married in January 1940 to Jane Wyman. They had two kids named Maureen and Michael. Michael was adopted. Reagan and Jane divorced in 1948. Reagan married Nancy Davis on March 4, 1952, and they had two children named Patti and Ron.

On November 8, 1966 the California voters elected Ronald Reagan as the state’s 33rd Governor. He was Governor from 1967 - 1975. Reagan ran for President in 1968 and 1976 but lost. He ran for President again and served as our 40th President from 1981 - 1989.

Reagan served two terms as President. He had three big accomplishments. They were reducing taxes, reducing government spending, and ending the cold war. On March 30, 1981 Reagan gave a speech at a hotel. He was walking to his car and he was shot by John Hinckley. When he was at the hospital the bullet was in his lungs. The surgery took almost three hours. Reagan joked, "I hope you are all Republicans." A doctor said, "Today, Mr. President, we are all Republicans." On November 6,1984 Reagan scored the largest President victory in U.S. history. On June 12, 1987, Reagan went to Germany and told Gorbachev to “Tear down this wall!” After he was President they tore down the Berlin Wall.

The doctors found out that he had Alzheimer's Disease after he was President. Nancy had been battling with Cancer. In 2000 Reagan’s Alzheimer’s had gotten worse. On June 5, 2004, Reagan died at home in Bel Air, California. They honored his funeral in D.C..

Reagan liked to write and loved horses. I like Reagan because he was a good President. Reagan was a great President for the U.S. because he preserved traditional American values.

Texas Report

Texas

By: Jamie Driver

November 20, 2011

I live in Texas. Texas is a big state that is south in the United States. Texas is exciting because of its history, resources, and geography.

Early Texas history was exciting and had many events. The 1st people who lived in Texas were the Native Americans. The Spanish Conquistadors looked for gold and setup Missions. The French had very few missions. Mexico won their independence from Spain and the president was Santa Anna. Stephen F. Austin settled Americans in the Texas Territory. Sam Houston helped lead a war of independence for Texas. The battle of the Alamo and the battle of the San Jacinto were importent in that war. All of these events happened so we could eventually become a U.S. state.

Texas was finally becoming a state. From 1836 - 1845 we became the Republic of Texas, which means it was its own country. Sam Houston, Mirabeau Lamar, and Anson Jones were three presidents of Texas. Under U.S. President James K. Polk, Texas became a state in 1845. Mexico had another war with Texas. Texas won, and the United States got lots of land from Mexico. Texas finally became a state.

There were many early missionaries in Texas. Angelina was a Christian Caddo and helped Spanish missionaries. Venerable Mother Maria De Jesus, helped convert Indians through apparitions, and was known as the Women in Blue. Friar Hidalgo rebuilt Churches in East Texas. Friar Antonio was known as the “Apostle of Texas” because he founded four missions in five years. These Catholics help early Texans be closer to God.

We can make lots of stuff in Texas. Texas raises lots of chickens, and cows which gives us Milk and Cream. Texas grows lots of corn, cotton, hay, wheat, potatoes, and grapefruit. In Texas we get lots of stuff out of the ground like, food, water, oil, gas, and salt. We make lots of stuff in Texas like computers, T.V.s, beds, helicopters, and spaceships. The stuff we make in Texas can help us alot.

There are many different regions in Texas. The Big Bend country has lots of deserts and mountains. The Gulf Coast has lots of beaches there. In the Hill Country there are lots of hills and underground caves. In the Panhandle Plains there are lots of flat grassy areas and prickly pear cacti. In the Piney Woods there are lots of forests of pine trees and swamps. In the Prairies and Lakes there are prairies with hills and tall grass and some small patches of trees and lakes. In the South Texas plains there are flat lands with grass and bushes that have thorns. All of these regions make Texas big and remarkable.

My favorite thing about Texas is the state flower: the bluebonnet. I also like the state bird: the mockingbird. I like living in Texas.
